Mobile Magic Wand: Augmented Reality on the Mobile Phones and Internet Devices

Introduction

The combination of new, powerful mobile phones, nearly ubiquitous high speed connectivity and the availability of rich databases and APIs enable Augmented Reality outside the highly-controlled environments in which AR was used in the past. Today Mobile AR can enrich the daily lives of individuals and help them to discover and escape into new and revolutionary experiences. Now we must package it up and take all this potential to mobile phone users.

What is this workshop?

The ISMAR Mobile Magic Wand Innovation Workshop is the first day-long event for developers of commercial and applied Mobile AR. We will focus on sharing practical information for and with those in the “trenches” of commercializing –those who are or will soon take AR components and applications to the mass market for profit.

Workshop Objectives

  • To inform participants regarding use of “off-the-shelf” Mobile AR development environments/platforms, the components for success as well as known obstacles to growth,
  • To discuss frameworks by which we can classify applications for Mobile AR today and in the near future,
  • To connect those who are and want to become active in taking Mobile AR to market in a setting which will foster development of a shared vision of the future of Mobile AR, and
  • To jointly shape a practical “guide” (an industry roadmap to successful commercialization) for how we can work together to reach the vision of ubiquitous Mobile AR.
  • Who Should Attend?

This workshop is a “must” for those who are already running companies in the field as well as those who plan to become active in the commercial Mobile AR market in the next 12 months.

There will be a mixture of business development, marketing and technical participants. Executives and strategists as well as practical hands-on developers will learn from mobile service providers, planners and designers, handset manufacturers, software developers, marketing and business development experts, content providers, consultants and investors.

Companies: Network operators, content and data publishers, software (application) developers, social networking operators, mobile handset manufacturers, design agencies, hosted application service providers, retail, advertising

We are currently planning 50 participants for this workshop.

    Program

The workshop will be conducted from 9 AM to 5:00 PM on Monday October 19 2009 and have three sections:

  • STATE OF THE ART in 2009
  • MOBILE AR in 2012
  • DEVELOPMENT OF ROADMAP

  • STATE OF THE ART in 2009

Following a short introductory presentation by the chair, there will be four 15 minute presentations describing how to use different Mobile AR tools (application development environments or existing APIs) to meet the needs of users in four distinct scenarios.

Our four user scenarios, provided by the workshop chair, are called:

  • Scenario #1: Entertaining the Teen in Town
  • Scenario #2: Lifelong Learning and Entertainment
  • Scenario #3: Assisting the Tourist
  • Scenario #4: College Freshman Arrives on Campus

  • The following experts have agreed to participate and share their solutions during the State of the Art portion of this workshop:

  • Peter Meier, CTO, Metaio
  • Chetan Damani, founder and CEO, AcrossAir
  • David J. Murphy, Researcher on Mixed Reality, Nokia Research Center
  • Markus Tripp, Project Manager, Mobilizy

  • The State of the Art presentations will be followed by interactive demonstrations in an informal format during the coffee break.

Result: participants will receive insights on how current solutions for developing AR differ or resemble one another in their approach. The chair will also share the most up-to-date list of current Mobile AR applications, services and platforms.

    MOBILE AR in 2012

This session will begin with an introductory presentation offering a clear vision for Mobile AR in 2012. What are the most compelling applications? What are the hardware requirements? How will an end-to-end system work (different from current systems)? What will be the new (future) value chain? How will Mobile AR generate revenues in the future?

Following the presentation, a panel of experts will discuss their views on the proposed vision and take questions from workshop participants. We will see the degree to which participants agree or diverge in their view of the future of Mobile AR.

Following the panel, the particpiants will form breakout groups for discussion of the following four topics:

  • Applications and Content in 2012
  • Developer tools in 2012
  • Hardware in 2012
  • Business Opportunities in 2012

  • ROADMAP FOR SUCCESS

To kick off this portion of the workshop, there will be presentations to propose some steps which the industry participants may take to ensure sustained growth in Mobile AR.

Following the presentations, a moderated group discussion will explore the many risks which lay ahead and possible strategies for addressing these in the near future.

In breakout groups, workshop participants will work on developing roadmaps to bridge the distance between the present and our vision of the future.

    Questions to be discussed include:

  • What are the major milestones in 2010 and 2011?
  • What silos need to be broken through?
  • Who is missing from the ecosystem today which must be created for the vision of the future to become reality?
  • Who should companies partner with to achieve their vision?

  • Result: A roadmap of the milestones necessary to achieve the likely future scenarios will be prepared and shared among the participants.

    Participants

Prospective participants are invited to register for this workshop on the main ISMAR registration portal .

The workshop fee is $250 for IEEE members, $315 for non-members.

Participants are encouraged to submit questions they wish to discuss and their positions (in writing) in advance of the workshop by way of e-mail to the chair of this Innovation Workshop
