Manufacturing the Future: Augmented Reality for Manufacturing and Design

Introduction

To download the agenda for Manufacturing the Future click here

Augmented Reality has changed the design process of many professionals. Today, living-rooms, new car models, assembly plants and end-consumer packages are modified with digital information. Evaluation of complex designs, planning of the manufacturing process as well as the verification process is quickly realized in the augmented environment. Planning and evaluating the future has been made easier with AR.

What is this workshop?

The ISMAR “Manufacturing the Future” workshop is the first full day event that will focus on sharing experiences, best techniques and tools that are used in the design and manufacturing professions, and discuss what is next to be done.

Workshop Objectives

  • To inform participants regarding state of the art of the tools for using Augmented Reality in Design and Manufacturing,
  • To connect those who are and want to become active in applying AR tools to solve common and unique Design and Manufacturing challenges,
  • To evaluate the applications of Design AR today and in the near future, and
  • To discuss participants' visions of how AR will play a role in Design and Manufacturing in the future.
  • Who Should Attend?

This workshop is a “must” for those who are applying AR in the fields of Design and Manufacturing as well as those who plan to become active in the area in the future.

Companies: Engineering firms, architects and architectual studios, design agencies, marketing agencies, software developers, manufacturers and investors.

    Program

The in-person phase of the workshop will be conducted from 9 AM to 5:00 PM on Monday October 19 2009 and have three sections:

  • STATE OF THE ART
  • OPPORTUNITIES
  • ROADMAP

  • STATE OF THE ART

What is the state of the art? What changes can AR bring to established planning and design processes? Which problems are currently solved for AR to work for these purposes?

Result: current best practices & overview of components, software available. These will be published on the ISMAR website.

    OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE FUTURE

What do the various industries need further from AR developers and researchers? What are the innovative applications out there? How should the ecosystem look like?

Result: We will see multiple visions of the future and we will have analyses of the strengths and weaknesses of each.

    ROADMAP

What do we need to achieve in the future? What are the milestones ahead?

Result: A guide containing likely scenarios for what is to come, published on the ISMAR web site.

Contributors: Technology users and developers, Designers with extensive experiences in their domain.

    Participants

Prospective participants are invited to register for this workshop.

The workshop fee before September 15, 2009 is $190 for IEEE members, $245 for non-members.

Participants are encouraged to submit questions they wish to discuss and their positions (in writing) in advance of the workshop by way of e-mail to

How to Contribute to this Workshop

To contribute to this workshop, please send a message to the Workshop chair, describing your position on one of the three areas of the program.

Include a short statement of your qualifications (experience in the domain) and send via e-mail to .

Contributors will present and/or manage the breakout groups and co-lead the workshop with the chair.

    Position Paper Deadlines

    • Submission deadline: August 31st, 2009
    • Notification: September 10, 2009
    • Final version: September 28, 2009
